Rapper Jig Lbrary

This library of electronically-produced music is intended as a learning aid - there is of course, no substitute for having a tune played by a traditional musician. There are probably hundreds of jigs suitable for accompanying rapper: those listed in this library are just a selection. However, tunes noted by Cecil J. Sharp in his books, the Sword Dances of Northern England (reprinted as ISBN 0 7158 1211 4) have been included, and are denoted by SDNE followed by the relevant book number(s).

Each jig is provided in three formats:

ABC (.ABC)		A music text-file format that can be imported into music notation shareware (such as MusicEase or *Noteworthy*) to generate a score.
Score (.JPG)		The music score, in JPEG format. Suitable for musicians who are able to sight-read..
Midi (.MID)		The basic melody, in MIDI format (140 bpm). Suitable for musicians who prefer to learn a tune "by ear".

The medley at the end of the list (playable at four different tempos) might also be useful for stepping practice etc.

In his books, The Sword Dances of Northern England, Cecil Sharp noted the tempo of the jigs played in the several villages that he visited: Earsdon, Swalwell and Winlaton at 160 beats per minute, and North Walbottle at 140-160 beats per minute. The tempo used at Beadnell was not noted.

The medley of jigs below is provided with a choice of tempos: 130, 140, 150 or 160 beats per minute. Each jig repeats twice before changing to the next. The whole cycle repeats ten times, giving a total playing duration of between 35 and 43 minutes, depending on the tempo selected.
